A Taiwanese diplomat has been impeached by the Taiwanese government after she was found guilty of mistreating her two Filipino domestic helpers in the United States,
64- year old Liu Sien Sien, former director of Taiwan’s mission in Kansas City, Missouri, who pleaded guilty of mistreating two Filipino maids, was impeached from her position by the Taiwan government Tuesday.
Taiwan officials accused Liu of hurting the country’s image by violating U.S. laws.
The unnamed Filipino maids, formerly employed by Liu, were reportedly made to work 16 to 18 hours a day, and were paid less than the agreed wages with no overtime pay, among other charges.
One of the Filipino maids said Liu had taken her passport, banned her from leaving the house without permission, monitored her with surveillance cameras and restricted her sleeping.
After Liu made a guilty plea deal, she was sentenced to time served on a fraud charge, paid over $80,000 in restitution to the two maids, and was deported to Taiwan.
Liu’s case is now sent to Taiwan’s Commission on the Disciplinary Sanctions of Functionaries, to decide on a penalty; ranging from demerit to dismissal.
