ZULIA, Venezuela, March 18 (UPI) -- Venezuelan investigators said Sunday they would appear in court with the latest evidence in the shooting death of the daughter of a Chilean diplomat.
Karen Berendique Vanessa Betancourt, 19, was killed Friday in a confrontation with police not far from the consulate in Zulia.
A translated report by El Nacional in Caracas said the unofficial version of events was that Berendique and her brother had been pulled over by police who opened fire when the brother fled the scene.
It remained unclear why the officers drew their guns, El Nacional said.
The victim's father, the consul in Zulia, said he hoped the situation would be resolved soon. "The pain we feel is indescribable," Fernando Berendique said. "It is not something we expected and we are in complete shock."
